Reflecting on Black History Month: Honouring Activists and the Role of GMB in Progress

This October, the UK celebrated Black History Month—a time dedicated to honoring the contributions, resilience, and lasting impact of Black communities across the nation. Throughout the month, we reflected on how Black individuals and groups have shaped British culture, advocated for equality, and forged paths toward a more inclusive society. This year, we paid tribute to those who have tirelessly championed change and highlighted the critical role of unions, especially the GMB (General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trade Union), in supporting equality and justice in workplaces.

The History and Legacy of Black Activism

From the days of the Windrush generation to contemporary social justice campaigns, Black Britons have long driven societal progress. Pioneers like Olive Morris, Darcus Howe, and Claudia Jones paved the way through protests, public speeches, and direct challenges to discriminatory policies that impacted Black communities. Today, activists continue their legacy, working tirelessly to ensure fair treatment and equality across all areas of British life, from education and healthcare to employment and the criminal justice system.

The Role of GMB in Advancing Equality

The GMB union has historically been a leader in advocating for equality, diversity, and inclusion. Representing over 600,000 members across various sectors, GMB has stood as an ally for Black workers, ensuring that their voices are heard and that their rights are protected. Over the years, GMB has consistently taken a firm stance against racial discrimination and has actively lobbied for legislative changes to improve working conditions for all, particularly for those from marginalized communities. In recent years, GMB expanded its anti-racism initiatives, introducing training programs to help members and leaders recognize and challenge racial prejudice. This commitment extended beyond workplaces as GMB members frequently participated in community-led events, collaborated with grassroots organizations, and supported educational programs promoting Black history and culture. This year’s Black History Month theme, "Saluting our Sisters," resonated with GMB’s dedication to uplifting Black women who have made significant contributions to the labor movement and beyond.

The Role of GMB in Advancing Equality

Black History Month 2024 provided a unique opportunity to spotlight both established and emerging activists. Leaders like Zita Holbourne, co-founder of Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (BARAC), and Patrick Vernon, who pioneered Windrush Day, continued to drive critical conversations around systemic inequality and advocate for policy changes. These activists focused on vital issues such as immigration rights, healthcare access, and fair wages, all of which deeply affect Black communities in the UK. Local and grassroots activists played equally pivotal roles within their communities. Their work to address disparities in housing, education, and employment opportunities contributed directly to the well-being of Black families across the country. Many led community outreach programs, after-school initiatives, and cultural events celebrating Black heritage, ensuring that younger generations understood their history and felt empowered to make their own contributions. GMB’s Ongoing Commitment to Inclusion and Equity

The GMB’s work aligned closely with the goals of Black History Month, as the union continued to provide resources, support, and representation to Black workers across all sectors. By collaborating with activist organisations, GMB supported events and workshops that raised awareness of Black British history and actively participated in campaigns against discrimination. The union’s dedication to building a fairer workplace stood as a reminder that racial equality benefits everyone, fostering a stronger and more cohesive society.

As Black History Month 2024 drew to a close, we honored the contributions of Black activists and celebrated the essential role of GMB in amplifying these voices. This month of reflection and celebration inspired many to continue supporting the fight for justice and equality, ensuring that the hard work of today’s activists paves the way for a brighter and more equitable future for all
